Hi Davy…love your version of the Cruncher. But it will cause all sorts of confusion on this side of the pond to have a totally different version of the Euro “Cruncher” that has been in use for well over ten years. Perhaps you could call it the Cruncher Americanus !!! Happy Easter Russ. S.
Hi Russ,
Yes, l know well of the UK version of cruncher nymphs this is the DW US version for cruncher wet flies.
You should get over here and fish the White river, it is a awesome fishery that holds more world record Browns than any other river in the world.
Hope all is well in the homelands.
Davy.
Hi Davy,
It is still cold here, 8 degrees today and windchill making it feel bitter. I was hoping to get a Hawthorn article done this week, but I think they might be still several weeks away yet. As soon as these Siberian winds go away Blagdon will fish its head off and I am looking forward to that… Diawl Bach and buzzer… remember them!!
I would love to get up and fish with you again, but I have got to have an eye done at the end of May so I guess it might not be this year.
Russ.
Russ, you mean 8c, not F right, about 40f. We may see temps here as low as 10f.
I use both DBs and buzzers, known as midges here often. In fact l knew the person who innovated the DB, he was from Cardiff, it mroe or less has the same value as the prince nymph here,
Have not fished Blagdon since the early 90s, and di so from the late 60s, used to be one of my favorite waters to fish along with Chew.
If you wish to fish stillwaters here you have to go west to Montana, Idaho or Washington State.
Montana has some great lakes which l have fished often UK style and its deadly, no one knows how to fish them that way.
What are you having done to your eye, if its cataracts that will take but a few days to sort out.
We fish my river 365 days a year, other than a few real cold days it always fishes well.
Davy
Hi Davy,
Yup! my left eye has a cataract, my right eye is fine. Saw the Consultant last week and told him that it was effecting my focussing and flytying and that really got him going. So hopefully toward the end of May I will get it sorted.
In the past couple of years we have been fishing DB’s with a speck of fluoro red or green under the tail whisks or rib the body, maybe just finish the head with some fluoro thread and it has made a discernable difference. Especially on the dull days when there is a lot of UV light. It doesn’t need much just a few turns, maybe something for you to have a play with.
It is still cold and horrid here but the long range forecast gives the temperature lifting next week so maybe Blagdon. But one thing is for sure I’m not going up there bobbing around in a boat and freezing my nuts off… roll on the sunshine I say.
Russ
Russ,
You will have a eye good as new after the surgery.
Do you rememember way back in FFFT a article l wrote about my SLF Trans caddis pupa, this is a deadly fly for stillwaters as it also is for rivers. If not let me know.
It was a fly pattern l innovated for Bewl many years ago.
My customers, two persons, the past 6 days, caught 482 trout, browns and bows. With the above fly and my version of the cruncher.
Cruncher is dropper 4ft above the SLF caddis pupa, which is the tan version, insect green was also good.
Davy
T-Bird,
Congrats on your first foray into the world of fly tying videos. Excellent performance!
I also particularly liked the nail covers with the jungle cock eyes!
Jon L.
Thank you, John- for those of you who have been around I am sure nothing looked out of the ordinary to you either, but very strange to others who have not been to a show or to the house when I am swamped with fly orders.
Steve has been trying to pull me from the shadows practically ever since we’ve known each other.
Nails: this is the most expensive set that I have ever created. Approximate cost for me to create this set of nails with these particular feathers is about $135. -$150.
The list: 2- jungle cock, pheasant (we shot), turkey (we hatched), 3- golden pheasant, 5- blue chatterer, 2- hen varieties, 2- peacock pheasant.
**Davy isn’t a fan of coloured nail polish for demo’s.**
Stay tuned, this was the first in a series of 5 for Davy and I combined which we will post for viewing.
Regards,
TBird
